Songs Everybody Knows

"Songs Everybody Knows" by Teresa Brewer.

Back when record albums had brash, audacious, bold titles.

From my "Scenes from a Thrift Store" series.

Oak Grove Bible Church

It was at a church camp sponsored by this church,
and under the ministry of Rev. Paul W. Rupp,
that I first heard the gospel to the point of
understanding and accepting it for salvation,
when I was about 15 years old.

When I was 18, I hitchhiked to Berkeley, California
to join the Christian World Liberation Front,
the street ministry of the Jesus People.

Cars would pass through this to pick up
church goers when it was raining.

I would stand in the foyer and
gaze out in this direction,
waiting for my church girlfriend,
Joanne Rowell, to show up.

I would go up these steps
on Sunday morning
for church services.

I would go down these steps on
Wednesday nights to sit with Joanne Rowell,
my church girlfriend, for a Bible study / prayer meeting.

Press and Play

Hard to believe people get addicted to these things, standing around in a store and rocking out to the tunes. It looks so tempting, to just press a picture of an album and listen to your heart's content. It lured me with song. I looked around for the source of the music. Aha, there it was, by an endcap.

I pressed the Mod Hits picture, hoping to hear freakbeat bands from the Ready Steady Go television show. Small Faces. The Who. The Kinks. Yardbirds. Them. Secret Affair. Spencer Davis Group. Purple Hearts. The Action. The Creation. I was anxious to start bopping like a Teddy Boy dandy who just hopped off his scooter.

I pressed the picture. Nothing. I pressed it again. Silence. I banged on it with the business end of my silver cane. No music. I walked away in frustrated deprivation.
